Residential Rekeying:

Rekeying is the changing of the pins in a lock so that a new key fits, and the old one will not; or changing the pins in several locks so that one key fits all of the locks.

The primary reason to rekey a house is to ensure that you are the only one with keys to your home. Others may have copies of your keys if:

1. You have just bought a new home; the previous owner, their friends or family, the real estate agent, and any home repair, maintenance, or cleaning crews hired by the previous owner may still have a copy of the keys to your house.
2. Your keys have been lost or stolen.
3. Employees, co-workers, or guests have had access to your keys at any time.

You may also want to rekey in order to have one key to open all of your exterior doors. This can be very convenient, and reduce your key clutter.

If you are selling your house, you may want to re-key your locks to minimize the number of keys to your house for the convenience of the real estate agent and new home owner.
